about
I hold a Master’s Degree in Rhetoric and Composition from Boise State University and a Bachelor’s in English and Philosophy from Drury University. I spent three years as a faculty member of the English Department and co-administrator of the Boise State Writing Center. Before moving to Boise, I lived and worked in Wuhu, China where I was a professor of English—and faculty advisor to the Speech and Debate Team—at Anhui Normal University.
I knew I was going to be a writer in the fourth grade. Mrs. Brock called me into the Principal’s Office—over the intercom, no less. I spent far too much time in Mrs. Brock’s office, never for good reasons, and felt sure I was in big trouble.
Mrs. Brock smiled as she slid my latest work across her desk: an insightful, and maybe a bit ‘out-there,’ musing on sub sandwiches. She commended my writing, telling me the piece was wonderful, funny, creative. A writer’s ego was born.
I am passionate about so many things: travel, conservation, literature & literacy, baseball, the outdoors, cuisine and culture. And I’ve found that writing is the connecting strand that gives me the most joy and meaning in what I do.
In realizing my dream job, I have so many people to thank. Educators like Mrs. Brock at Kearney Elementary, along with Dr. Richard Schur and Dr. Peter Browning of Drury University. I have my mom, JoAnn, and my dad, Wayne, in Kansas City to thank for always keeping a book in my hand and love and curiosity in my heart.
As a freelance writer my focuses include travel, culture, and media. I value collaboration, and have been able to work and grow with marketing organizations, non-profits, and personal clients. With a professional background that couples creative and technical elements of composition, I love the challenge of altering and adapting voice and content to any situation.
Originally from Kansas City, I have written and studied in the Ozarks, the Rocky Mountains, and Southeast China. I have fallen in love with—and am now based in—Boise, Idaho, where I love to hike, bike, backpack, and explore the stunning Idaho landscape.
